If you fancy a date with lady luck, Puerto Rico has plenty of places to see if the odds are stacked in your favor. There are 17 casinos on the island. All of them by law, are in hotels. Actually the island was the second jurisdiction in the US, after Nevada, to legalize gambling. Since 1948 gambling has been legal in Puerto Rico. Just recently sports betting was also legalized as well as online betting. On the island legally you must be at least 18 years old to enter a casino and gamble. Most Casinos in the metropolitan area are open 24 hours/7days. Out on the island operating times vary but most stay open to the wee hours.
The rush of a Casino
In Puerto Rico the more popular games and machines are available. Slot machines are always a crowd favorite and there’s everything from penny machines to $25 slots. Some of the larger casinos have 500+ machines.
Blackjack is also a popular strategic card game that both Puerto Ricans and visitors love. Roulette with its unpredictable action is another casino crowd pleaser. Lighted automated tables and ease of play add to the excitement.
Poker isn’t as popular with the locals but it is catching on with a couple of tournaments held on weekends. No limit Texas Hold’em is usually the preferred game. Craps tables become popular as the night rolls on. Some Casinos offer high stakes, separate rooms with tables for special guests.
Sports and online betting
In Puerto Rico sports betting is fully legal so you can place your bets at a retail location and online. To use the online booking app you have to physically go to a retail location with a government issued id to register. After that you’re free to place your bets. Bet MGM has a physical location in Casino del Mar at La Concha Hotel in Condado, Caesar’s Sportsbook has a retail location at Metro Casino in the Sheraton Hotel in the Convention District. Both have sports lounges with plenty of screens displaying odds and games.
Horse racing
Puerto Rico has one thoroughbred racetrack and betting on races is legal. Hipódromo Camarero is just 25 minutes east of the metro area in the town of Canóvanas. Around 7 races are held everyday from Thursday to Sunday. You can watch the races live at the clubhouse and even inspect the horses close up before each race. They also have a lounge called Sportium that handles sportsbetting for a whole host of leagues and events.
