Campechada- a celebration of Puerto Rican Culture- Aug. 31- Sept. 1
Every year since 2011 the Campechada is held in a town in Puerto Rico. This event brings together many elements of Puerto Rican culture; music, food, artisans, artists, theater and more. This year the weekend long event will be held August 31st to September 1st in Santurce on Ponce de Leon avenue and DeDiego streets. The 2024 edition will be dedicated to Victoria Espinosa one of the premier playwrights on the Island.
Many stages, many venues
When you visit you can experience three different main stages featuring music and dance performances. In honor of Victoria Espinosa there will be an emphasis on the scenic arts. Many theaters in the area will have exhibits, documentaries and plays running throughout the day. All along the route there will also be street theater performances for both young and adult crowds. More than 100 artisans will set up their wares along the sidewalks and in La Placita de Santurce. There will also be about 50 different food stations and restaurants participating in the event. You can even participate in a guided tour to learn the history of the Santurce.
There are literally hundreds of things to see and do for the whole family. It’s best to arrive and just stroll around so you can discover what’s happening in the area. Walking, Uber or public transportation will probably be the best way to get there since parking may be limited by the large amount of people expected. There will be free shuttle buses running from Sagrado Corazón train station to the main area during the event. The activities start around 10:30 am and run to 10:00pm
Campechada gets its name from Jose Campeche an 18th century Puerto Rican self-taught painter who also excelled in the making of musical instruments, architecture, topography and shield design. He’s considered one of the best Hispanic American painters of his time.
