A little bit more than 2 decades ago the first Boqueron Pride Fest was held on the beach in this southwestern town. Almost 300 people participated and cheered on local drag queens as they performed on a one foot tall stage placed on the sand.
The largest LGBTQ+ event in the Caribbean
This year the Boquerón Pride Fest (Orgullo Boquerón) will run from Thursday, June 6th to Sunday the 9th. Organizers expect more than 30,000 people to experience four days of fun, music and community activities. This festival has now become the largest LGBTQ+ event in Puerto Rico and all of the Caribbean. Most of the hotel rooms in the area are reserved one year in advance by festival goers. It is easily the largest happening in the town of Cabo Rojo in both size and economic impact.
El Poblado will host
Orgullo Boquerón is celebrated in and around the main street of El Poblado de Boquerón, a small fishing village that attracts visitors from all over Puerto Rico due to its seafood, nightlife, beaches, boating opportunities and nature reserves. Although there are no exclusively gay clubs or bars in El Poblado, this small village is considered the second most popular gay destination in Puerto Rico for its drag queen events and gay-friendly bars, restaurants and hotels. The success of the event fulfills the wishes of its organizers to appreciate businesses support for the LGBTQ+ community over the years.
What to expect
The highlight of the event will be the parade on Sunday the 9th. Groups and performers will show off their talents starting at 1:00pm on the main street of Boquerón. Although there will be live music every night of the festival, the main acts will take the stage on Sunday. La India, a salsa singer and Giselle a merengue star, will be the headliners.
This event is a lot of fun and filled with food, color, dancing and good vibrations. A true celebration of pride that’s open to all people. Check it out.
